HMR Medical Director Included on the Best Doctors of America List for 2013

(December, 2012) L. Raymond Reynolds, MD, FACP, FACE, ECNU, Medical Director of the HMR Program in Cooperation with the University of Kentucky, was recently included on the Best Doctors of America List for 2013. Only 5% of doctors in the country are chosen by their peers to earn this prestigious honor. More than 47,000 physicians were surveyed and asked, "If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?"

In addition to his service on HMR's Medical Advisory Board and speaking engagements all over the country, Dr. Reynolds helps patients get started in the HMR Program and monitors their progress weekly. He is also Professor of Internal Medicine, Clinical Director Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center, Endocrinology Fellowship Program Director at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.

HMR Donates 30,000 Entrees to Hurricane Sandy Victims

(November, 2012) HMR donated more than 30,000 HMR Entrees to support the relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy victims. The entrees were distributed in lower Manhattan and surrounding areas that were hit particularly hard. Because the entrees are shelf-stable, require no refrigeration, and can be consumed at room temperature, they are ideal in this type of situation. Employees from HMR's New York Distribution Center (where HMR weight-loss foods are shipped) along with staff from a local HMR Program volunteered to personally deliver the entrees. HMR Program Meets All Criteria for U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Recommendations for Obesity Management

(July, 2012) The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force released new guidelines recommending that clinicians screen all patients for obesity and when appropriate, refer them to a comprehensive lifestyle management program to help them lose weight. The guidelines recommend that clinicians should offer or refer patients with a BMI of 30 or higher to "intensive, multicomponent behavioral interventions."

The recommendations indicate that a high intensity intervention produces the most substantial weight loss. HMR meets all recommended criteria considered important in a successful program, including:
  • Comprehensive diet and lifestyle education program
  • Multiple sessions (the recommendation is for 12 to 26 sessions in the first year)
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Physical activity
  • Addressing barriers to change
  • Active use of self-monitoring (record keeping)
  • Maintenance component

Tackling the Obesity Epidemic: HMR Presents Extraordinary Outcome Data at AMGA Conference

(March, 2012) The epidemic rise in obesity presents significant clinical, operational, and financial challenges for hospitals, group health practices, and other healthcare professionals. With the health consequences of obesity accelerating faster than the epidemic itself, and medical costs of obesity forecasted to rise 70% by 2015, clearly this trend is not sustainable.

Amidst this discouraging outlook, HMR hosted a lively panel presentation at the recent AMGA (American Medical Group Association) conference that highlighted the hopeful message that effective, evidence-based lifestyle treatments for obesity do exist. The presentation "Medically Significant Outcomes Possible Through Effective, Evidence-Based Lifestyle Obesity Treatment" addressed the specific and clearly defined components needed for successful outcomes, including a structured program with well-defined and measureable variables.
