Top Strategy to Prevent or Delay Diabetes

(November, 2008) According to Anita M. Kinne, RN, BSN, Director of Nursing for HMR®, many people may not be aware that their lifestyle choices, specifically physical inactivity, and/or excess body weight, puts them at a much greater risk for diabetes. She notes that, “This risk starts to escalate sooner than you might think, considering that a person is considered ‘overweight’ when their BMI (body mass index, a ratio of height to weight) is 25 or above”. (A woman who is 5’4” and weighs 145 pounds or more, or a man who is 5’8” and weighs 164 pounds or more, is considered overweight.) The good news is that it may be easier than you think to avoid diabetes entirely.

Ms. Kinne adds that “all of the research on diabetes and pre-diabetes in the last several years has come to the same conclusion—engaging in healthier lifestyle behaviors, for example losing weight, becoming physically active, and eating a low-fat, and high fiber diet, are the most effective ways to prevent and/or delay diabetes.” She notes that “losing weight and eating healthier may be the most important things you can do to reduce your risk.” Plus, it will be more cost effective in the long run in terms of avoiding medications needed to treat the disease.

HMR has published or presented more than a dozen studies documenting the impact the HMR Program can have on patients with pre-diabetes or Type 2 diabetes. Click here for summaries of HMR diabetes research.
