This study examined data from women who lost an average of 46 lbs. using HMR meal replacements for 12 weeks. It was found that an increased level of obesity does not provide protection against the loss of fat-free mass compared to lesser degrees of obesity.

Weight training prevented muscle wasting during a very low-calorie diet using HMR meal replacements that obtained large-scale weight losses.

No differences were found in the effects of exercise combined with a very low-calorie (VLCD) diet using HMR meal replacements compared to a VLCD alone in terms of preserving fat-free mass.
