“The program is easy to follow, it doesn't take a lot of thinking or planning, and the support you get from the coaches and weekly group sessions is amazing.”
I have a very demanding, sedentary job at a hospital with long hours, which makes it very difficult to cook and exercise during the week. At 47 years old, I was at my heaviest weight and dealing with back and shoulder pain that was not getting better, even with physical therapy, and diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure. I have tried other programs before and lost weight but always gained it all back, so I wanted to try something else. My ex-husband did HMR several years ago and was very successful in keeping the weight off, so I decided to give HMR a try. I joined the Healthy Solutions diet plan at the HMR clinic at UC San Diego Weight Management. Since joining the program, I’ve lost 82 lbs.1 and feel happier and healthier.

I like that with the HMR Program I didn’t have to measure or weigh my food, or track my calories. It was convenient and there was a variety of meals to choose from. I am a very picky eater so I was a little hesitant about the HMR meals, but after I tried some of the entrees, I found that they were pretty good and I was able to enhance the flavor with seasonings and low-calorie condiments like salsa, hot sauce, or red peppers.

The Support Made All the DifferenceI’ve tried other weight-loss programs in the past but I never got the support that I needed and found it difficult to figure out what I needed to eat, so I always gained the weight back. I’ve tried a full liquid diet in the past and lost weight but as soon as I introduced solid food back in, I gained the weight right back. I didn’t have the continued support and accountability that I needed to keep the weight off.

The weekly group sessions and accountability, like simple record keeping, keeps me on track with maintaining my weight in Phase 2 (maintenance). Having the goal of eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day taught me to cook more, and pushed me to try new vegetables that I now really enjoy. In terms of the cost, I found that I was saving money compared to how much I used to spend eating out.

“The HMR Program is so convenient and easy that it works well with my hectic schedule.”

Positive Lifestyle ChangesBefore this program I didn’t eat breakfast, and sometimes would skip lunch or go out to eat for lunch and then I would work late and end up so hungry that I would order out. Now I make sure I eat small meals regularly throughout the day, and I meal plan on the weekends so that I have quick meals during the week that I can just heat up in the microwave. I eat 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day and I try to eat every 3-4 hours. I also drink more water than I ever used to. I found that drinking water with a straw helped me drink more water throughout the day. I exercise more now than I ever used to and I’m able to move around without any pain. Also, my diabetes is now under control.2 I just feel so much more energized.

“I am more confident now, and I’m no longer afraid to have my photo taken of my whole body.”

If you join the program, take it one day at a time, and strive for progress, not perfection. The program is easy to follow, doesn’t take a lot of thinking or planning, and the support you get from the coaches and weekly group sessions is amazing. If you follow the program, the weight will come off. I highly recommend the Healthy Solutions plan, which includes fruits and vegetables, because it made it so much easier to follow, and also taught me to cook and try new healthy foods when I moved into the maintenance phase of the program.
