Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I try the HMR® Program?

The HMR Program for Weight Management™ has been helping people achieve weight-loss results for over 30 years in programs at prominent hospitals and medical centers nationwide. More than just a diet, HMR is a lifestyle-focused program that can help you lose weight while learning the skills you need to keep it off.

Another reason to try the program is results. A clinical study showed an average weight loss of 66 lbs. at 26 weeks for people who participated in the Decision-Free® and Healthy Solutions® clinic program*. That’s 21 % of their initial body weight, which exceeds the 5-10% weight loss that health agencies say is necessary to produce medical benefits**.  The Healthy Solutions at Home program with group phone coaching shows a median weight loss of 23 lbs. at 12 weeks.

How is HMR different?

The HMR Program does not involve fads, gimmicks, or theories about what “might” work. We focus on research-based strategies supported by 30 years of testing and development. And we teach the healthy lifestyle skills you need to keep it off. Our health coaches receive extensive and ongoing education and training on effective weight loss-strategies, how to facilitate weight loss in a group setting, and motivational lifestyle change. We are committed to supporting you every step of the way!

Note: Health Educators/Health Coaches are not medical professionals nor are they practicing as dietitians.

How does the HMR Program work?

The goal of the program is to help you lose weight while learning simple lifestyle changes related to diet and exercise. HMR diets are highly structured to make it easier for you to lose weight. Weight-loss plans use HMR foods, including Shakes, Entrees, Multigrain Hot Cereal, puddings and snack bars, which are used in place of other meals and snacks so you don’t have to think about what, or how much to eat.

Research has shown that diets that include the strategic use of packaged, portion-controlled meal replacements—the foundation of the HMR diet —are more effective than standard diets where you choose your own meals. (Anderson et al. Postgraduate Medicine 2011; 123; 205-213, Heymsfeld et al. International Journal of Obesity, 2003; 27-537-549)

Lose weight in person at an HMR location:

HMR weight-loss plans are offered through hospitals, medical practices, and other facilities across the country. Program options include medically supervised and non-medically supervised weight-loss plans, along with a maintenance program to help you learn the skills you need to keep off the weight.

At an HMR location, you can attend a free information session where you can learn all the details of the program and the costs of the different plans. To find a clinic in your area, click here.

Phase 1 of the program is highly structured and focuses on helping you lose weight right away. Seeing consistent weight loss on the scale week after week is reinforcing and helps you establish momentum toward your goals.

When you have reached your weight loss goal or are ready for a less structured plan, you will transition to Phase 2 of the program. In Phase 2, you will focus on the skills needed to keep off the weight you have lost or even continue to gradually lose more if that is your goal.

Phase 3 is the self-management phase of the program. Even after you are no longer attending weekly coaching sessions, HMR offers a variety of support options, including online tools and community to help you keep your weight management a priority.

When you have reached your weight-loss goal or are ready for a less structured plan, you will transition to Phase 2 of the program. In Phase 2, you will focus on the skills needed to maintain your weight loss, or even continue to lose weight if that is your goal.

What lifestyle skills does the HMR Program teach?

The Program focuses on three skill areas that are critical for weight-loss and weight maintenance:

  • How to make healthier food choices more consistently by eating foods that are lower-fat, lower-calorie, and higher-volume.
  • How to eat more fruits and vegetables, with the goal of ultimately consuming at least five full- cup servings each day.
  • How to increase your physical activity with the goal of building up to 2,000 calories or more burned through exercise each week (or whatever is consistent with your doctor’s recommendation).

Research has shown that practicing these skills may also help you reduce the risk factors for the development of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, and other chronic diseases.

What are the health benefits of losing weight?

Losing weight may result in health improvements. Excess weight and obesity are risk factors for a number of chronic health conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, joint problems, sleep apnea, and more. The lifestyle changes you learn in the program—increasing physical activity, consuming more fruits and vegetables and decreasing fat in your diet—may also contribute to health improvements. It is also likely you'll look and feel better! Health benefits are individual, and depend on a number of factors. Before starting any new diet or exercise program, it is important to speak with your health care professional.

What are HMR weight-loss foods?

HMR foods are used in place of higher-calorie meals and snacks, making it easier for you to lower your calories while maintaining good nutrition. HMR weight-loss foods are delicious and can be prepared in just a minute or two. The foods include packaged entrees (such as Lasagna with Meat Sauce and vegetarian Mushroom Risotto), shakes, puddings, soup, multigrain hot cereal and snack bars. All HMR weight-loss foods are portioned-controlled to support your weight-loss goals. Click here for ingredients and detailed nutrition information.

Why use HMR weight-loss foods?

The research is very clear: diets that include the strategic use of packaged, portion controlled meal replacements—the foundation of the HMR diet plans, are more effective than standard diets where you choose your own meals*. HMR foods have been used in HMR weight-loss programs at hospitals and medical centers across the country for 30 years.

Plus, HMR foods taste great and they're incredibly versatile. You can eat them hot, cold, or even as a pudding (with HMR 70 Plus). You can mix with low- calorie flavorings to create a variety of recipes. You can add fruit or vegetables to make your meals really filling. And HMR foods don't require refrigeration so you can take them anywhere.

How does auto delivery work?

After your initial order of three weeks’ worth of HMR weight-loss foods, you’ll be automatically charged for, and shipped two weeks’ worth of HMR foods every 14 days until you cancel. Of course, you may change your order selections as long as you continue to order the minimum required number of HMR foods. In Phase 2, your auto delivery orders are billed and shipped once per month, and there is no minimum order. You may cancel your participation in auto delivery at any time. Note: If you are enrolled in a clinic program, you must purchase your HMR foods through the clinic where you participate, to ensure you are meeting the nutritional requirements of the more highly structured diet.

How can I find ingredient information for HMR weight-loss foods?

The ingredients and nutritional information for HMR weight-loss foods can be found on the packaging. You can also find detailed nutrition information here.

If I have food allergies, which HMR foods can I use?

Some HMR foods contain common allergens such as dairy, eggs, wheat, soy, and nuts. Common food allergens are listed at the end of the ingredient list on every HMR food package. You can find detailed nutrition information here. Or you can call us 1-877-501-9257, M-F, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET.

Which HMR weight-loss shake is right for me?

All HMR Shakes are filling, and delicious. They are available in chocolate and vanilla, but can be combined with virtually any low-calorie add-ins to provide a variety of flavors. They mix up quickly for delicious thick shakes, fruit smoothies, mousses, puddings, and more. You'll never be bored!

For most newcomers, we recommend the HMR 120 Shake mix, which is available in economical canisters. Vitamins are included in the mix, so you don't need to take an extra vitamin tablet. (120 calories per serving.) However, if you’re lactose-intolerant, we recommend the HMR 70 Plus Shake. It’s lactose-free, and it can be prepared either as a shake, or a thick and creamy pudding. HMR 70 Plus is packaged in convenient, single-serve packets. (110 calories per serving.)

Where can I find recipes using HMR foods?

You can find hundreds of different and delicious recipes using HMR foods here.

Can people with diabetes use HMR foods?

Yes. HMR foods have been recommended by doctors for their patients with diabetes because of the foods' nutritional formulation. However, if you are on medication for diabetes, it is important to check with your physician before starting any diet program.

How do I use HMR Entrees?

HMR Entrees are easy, delicious, and heat up in a microwave in about a minute, or you can use traditional methods to heat the entree on the stove top or conventional oven. We recommend that you combine your HMR Entrees with 2 or more cups of vegetables (fresh, frozen, or canned) for a quick meal that’s low in calories, yet will help you feel full. Just one HMR entree with vegetables instead of a typical restaurant lunch or dinner can help save you a significant amount of calories!

Which HMR Entrees are vegetarian?

Five-Bean Casserole is a vegan/vegetarian item. Mushroom Risotto, Cheese and Basil Ravioli with Tomato Sauce, and Pasta Fagioli are also vegetarian but contain either milk, eggs or cheese.

How is the HMR Multigrain Hot Cereal different from other hot cereals?

Many hot cereals contain just one grain. This cereal combines three grains: oats, corn, and wheat. This impacts the texture of the cereal and, therefore, is not exactly like oatmeal, grits, or instant wheat cereal. Three kinds of dried fruit and nonfat dry milk also make this product different and delicious.

HMR’s Multigrain Hot Cereal provides two servings of whole grains, 10 grams of protein and 25% of the Daily Value for most vitamins and minerals in each serving.

Are HMR foods kosher?

HMR Shakes, BeneFit Bars, and Multigrain Hot Cereal are kosher and manufactured under the supervision of the Orthodox Union, also known as O-U. All kosher products are kosher dairy. (A small D is next to the O-U symbol on the packaging.) HMR Entrees and HMR 500 Chicken Soup are not kosher (Please note: no HMR products are kosher for Passover).

What is the shelf life of HMR Entrees?

We recommend using the products before the “Best By Date” on the side of the box. Safe food handling practices should be followed with any HMR Entree that has been opened. The food should be heated and eaten immediately. If opened, the entree should be refrigerated for up to 2 days. If, for any reason, the seal on the tray has been broken, the entree should be discarded.

What are the ideal storage conditions for HMR Entrees?

HMR Entrees are shelf-stable and therefore require no refrigeration. Entrees should be stored at room temperature or in a cool, dark, dry space.

Is there any BPA (Bisphenol A) in the plastic used in the entree lid or tray?

No. The HMR trays and lids are single use items approved for use in food manufacturing and home microwave ovens.

How much fluid should I drink per day while on an HMR diet plan?

Staying well hydrated, especially when you are on a diet, is important. If you do not drink enough fluids, you may experience side effects such as dizziness or headaches. When dieting, most people should drink an 8-ounce glass of water or noncaloric beverage eight times per day (for a daily total of 64 fluid ounces or more), unless your doctor has instructed you otherwise.

I’m lactose-intolerant. Is there lactose in the HMR foods?

HMR 70 Plus Shakes are lactose-free. The other HMR Shakes, as well as HMR 500 Chicken Soup, HMR Multigrain Hot Cereal, HMR BeneFit® Bars, and a few of the HMR Entrees contain lactose. However, people who are lactose-intolerant can often enjoy any of the HMR foods by using a Lactaid® tablet. Because of their lower lactose content, the HMR Entrees, HMR Multigrain Hot Cereal and HMR BeneFit Bars may be tolerated by some people without the need for Lactaid. (This varies with the individual.) For example, there is about the same amount of lactose in the hot cereal as there is in a ½ cup of fat-free milk, even less in many of the BeneFit Bars.

The following HMR Entrees are lactose-free: Mexican-Style Bean and Beef Enchiladas, Vegetable Stew with Beef, Chicken Creole with Brown Rice, Savory Chicken, Five-Bean Casserole, Turkey Chili, Steak Strips with Red Potatoes and Sauce, and Vegetarian Thai Curry with Brown Rice.

Is there caffeine in HMR weight-loss foods?

HMR Chocolate Shakes include 9–15 mg of caffeine per single serving.  This amount of caffeine equals about 1/5 the amount of caffeine found in an 8 oz. cup of brewed coffee.  The BeneFit bars have naturally occurring caffeine from the chocolate ingredients. The Double Chocolate Chip Bar has approximately 2.5 mg per bar.  The Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch bar contains approximately 1 mg. per bar.

Can I use HMR foods if I’m breast-feeding?

We do not recommend program to women who are nursing for less than 12 weeks. It's always best to consult with your obstetrician and/or pediatrician regarding any diet or food questions you may have while breastfeeding.

If you have been nursing for 12 weeks or longer and your doctor recommends that you lose weight using the Healthy Solutions at Home program, or you choose to use HMR weight-loss foods as part of a maintenance plan, the following information is important to discuss with your doctor. HMR Shakes and HMR Multigrain Hot Cereal contain artificial sweeteners (acesulfame potassium, aspartame, sucralose, or saccharin), which some health professionals recommend limiting during breast feeding. HMR BeneFit Bars, Shakes, Soup, and Multigrain Hot Cereal are vitamin-fortified and should be evaluated if prenatal vitamins are still being used. HMR Entrees are nutritionally balanced foods and may be used as part of a diet program that your doctor recommends. All HMR meal replacements list common allergens on the packaging. Please check the nutrition labels on each item before any use during the time you are breastfeeding.
